چکیده

We investigated the pattern of infection of Gammarus aequicauda (Amphipoda) with metacercariae of Levinseniella tridigitata (Trematoda: Microphallidae) in a natural lagoon. Prevalence was significantly higher in females than in males, whereas there was no difference between sexes in parasitic intensity. Despite the very large size of L. tridigitata metacercariae, the mean abundance increased with host size and in both sexes, suggesting that the accumulation of this parasite has no significant effect on host survival. Levinseniella tridigitata is known not to alter its host's behavior. Our results contrast with those obtained with other helminths that alter host behavior in order to favor their transmission to the definitive host.

A new species of Microphallus (Trematoda: Microphallidae) from Venezuela.

During 1997-1999, a total of 94 crabs, Uca rapax were collected from La Sabana, La Ceiba and El Paujil, Sucre State, Venezuela. Of these 36 were infected with metacercariae. Two parasites were located in the abdominal muscles and one under the tissue of carapace and gonad. These metacercariae grew to adults in the following genera: Levinseniella, Microphallus and Maritrema, in the period of 2-5...

Metacercariae of Gynaecotyla squatarolae (Digenea: Microphallidae) were discovered from the shore crab, Macrophthalmus dilatatus, purchased at a market in a coastal town of Taean-Eup, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea. Their adult flukes were confirmed by experimental infection of rats. The metacercariae of G. squatarolae were elliptical (391.1 x 362.5 micrometer), and the excysted metacerca...

Effects of Different Salinities on Juvenile Growth of Gammarus aequicauda (Malacostraca: Amphipoda)

Gammarus aequicauda is a euryhaline amphipod that is a common inhabitant of brackish environments of the Mediterranean Sea. In the Ebro delta, the population density of G. aequicauda is highly variable throughout the year. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of salinity on the growth of G. aequicauda juveniles. G. aequicauda embryos and juveniles can survive and grow i...

This study focused on the ingestion and assimilation of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile litter by Gammarella fucicola Leach and Gammarus aequicauda Martynov, two dominant detritivore amphipods of the P. oceanica leaf litter. Scanning electron microscope observations indicated that leaf litter is highly colonized by diverse diatoms, bacteria and fungi, which may constitute a potential food source...
